BABIES
BY JONATHAN HARVEY
MANCHESTER SCHOOL OF THEATRE, APRIL 2021

Liverpudlian Joe Casey is twenty four, gay and a form tutor at a southeast London comprehensive. Joe's life is spliced between the drug-using excesses of his lover Woodie and the advances of his female pupils (and their mothers).
A warm and funny comedy by the author of the 1993 hit Beautiful Thing.

This was my first full production at a drama school and in quite unusual circumstances as it was 2021, and the show would be filmed socially distanced - as you can see each character is 2m apart at all times!
I learnt a huge amount from it as a director and I’m incredibly proud of what we made together. It was also a joy to work closely with Jonathan Harvey as he supported me and the company throughout.

Joe did a wonderful job directing my play Babies. He approached the challenges of socially distanced staging with energy and creativity, and found the comedy in the piece. He drew out strong performances from the cast and his production brought the text to life with clarity and imagination. I enjoyed working closely with him to support the production.

Joe gives his actors a real gift. He brings a clear and exciting vision to his projects, whilst allowing his actors the time and space to explore their story. I felt like a true collaborator from table read to performance.
