Devising Training at Huddersfield’s Lawrence Batley Theatre

I was delighted to be invited by the Lawrence Batley Theatre to lead a specialised Devised Theatre workshop for their Youth Theatre facilitators.

Over an intensive two-hour session, we explored how to cultivate a rehearsal room culture rooted in 'brave space'—an environment where young people feel empowered to take risks and embrace failure as part of the process.

We moved from initial stimuli to the creation of compelling ten-minute performances, utilizing collaborative techniques like infinity mapping and free writing.

We rounded off the session by using alphabet improv to rapidly build character-driven scenes, equipping the facilitators with a practical toolkit for their own ensembles.
